Solar Panels
The price of solar panels – photovoltaics – has come tumbling down in recent years. The panels – which clearly make a fairly unmissable public statement – are not the whole story: an installation needs some apparatus to feed the power into the grid. Panels have also become more effective recently.
Generating your own power will cut your electricity bill since you only pay for the power taken from the grid. This might mean hurrying home on a sunny afternoon so you can put the dishwasher on and run it for nothing!
The subsidies provided in the early days have of course now been eliminated but since the price of panels has fallen so much, it is still usually worth doing. Check with The Energy Saving Trust.
Having any panels facing south is helpful but not essential since the sun moves across the sky – though having panels face north is not recommended. If you can avoid putting them in the shade of a dormer window, so much the better.
